Criminally Queer: The Bolton 7 – BBC Sounds / Audiolab – Mix

I was so happy to be asked by producer Hugh Sheehan and exec producer Anishka Sharma if I would mix Hugh’s series, which he made at Reduced Listening as part of the BBC Audio Lab programme.

Over five episodes, Hugh tells the story of the Bolton 7, a group of queer men who were prosecuted in the 90s using outdated, homophobic indecency laws which criminalised certain types of gay sex. Hugh does a brilliant job of making sure this story is not forgotten, as well as connecting the injustice of that time to the current political climate around LGBTQ rights.

Hugh also composed all the music, which is extra legendary. I actually ended up mixing just the first four episodes! Because classic timeline slippage meant I couldn’t do the fifth. That one was mixed by Tom Brignell.
